Skin Cancer

Skin cancer can take many different forms, including basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma.

What are the symptoms of skin cancer?
The symptoms vary according to the type of skin cancer, but any changes in your skin, especially a mole or other small spot of skin that is new or appears to be changing, should be examined by a doctor.

How is skin cancer diagnosed?
Typically, an examination and biopsy will be done. Sometimes, the biopsy is itself the only treatment, if the entire questionable skin growth is removed.

What are the treatments for skin cancer?
Surgical removal is often all that is needed for cancer that has not spread. When cancer has spread, chemotherapy and radiation are often part of treatment.

What are the risk factors for skin cancer?
Sun exposure and use of tanning beds are the biggest risks. People with fair complexions are at higher risk than are people with darker skin. Having a large number of moles is also a risk factor. If you have a family history of skin cancer, you are at higher risk.
