GYN Oncology Center

The Gynecologic Oncology Center at CalvertHealth is a collaborative effort with Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore The center, the first of its kind in our region, offers women in Southern Maryland the opportunity to be expertly treated for cervical, endometrial and ovarian cancers close to home. Dr. Hyung Ryu, fellowship-trained in gynecologic oncology, is the medical director.

Dr. Ryu earned his medical degree at Georgetown University School of Medicine where he also completed his residency in obstetrics & gynecology. His fellowship in gynecologic oncology was completed at the University of Minnesota Hospital in Minneapolis. Dr. Ryu has extensive training in leading edge laparoscopic techniques used for the treatment of cancers of the female reproductive tract. He actively participates in research concerning evolving surgical techniques, as well as effective options for expanded chemotherapy regimens with the hope of improving outcomes for patients diagnosed with gynecologic cancers.

Dr.Ryu sees patients at CalvertHealth one day per month. Some surgeries are performed at Calvert. However, when a patient's condition requires a more complex procedure, they may be treated at Mercy. In that case, their pre-op and follow-up care can still be done at CalvertHealth.

The Gynecologic Oncology Center is located in Suite 112 of the Calvert Medical Office Building in Prince Frederick (next to the hospital). For more information or to make an appointment, call 410-535-8272.

Dr. Welgoss is seeing patients two days a month at CalvertHealth. His office is located in Suite 203 of the Calvert Medical Office Building. For more information, call 410-414-2775.

My story. My doctor. My Medical Center.

"I really liked how they put the mom first."

"The staff takes care of their patients with pride."

The 30-year-old dental hygienist, who lives in St. Mary's County with her husband, Shawn, said she chose to deliver both of her daughters at CalvertHealth's Family Birth Center for three main reasons - her doctor, the experienced nursing staff and the pediatric care provided.

"Most of my OB visits were at the Solomons Medical Center," said Gutman. "I was able to get good appointment times and rarely had to wait."

She went on to add, "Dr. Mitra (Nassiraee) is very professional but easy to talk to. You always feel like you're the center of her attention. She explains everything."

With her busy work schedule, Gutman said she and her husband opted for the birth education class offered on Saturdays. "You couldn't ask for any better instruction," she said. "I felt prepared even when I needed a C-section."

Gutman said she bought her breastfeeding supplies at Nurturing Necessities. "They were very helpful when it came to choosing the pump that would best fit my needs," she said. "I also attended the breastfeeding support group. I would definitely go more often if I could fit it in with my work schedule."

- Therese Gutman, Hollywood, MD
