CalvertHealth Cancer Center is pleased to welcome fellowship-trained hematologist and medical oncologist Charbel F. Matar, MD, FASCO, to our growing team of cancer specialists. He brings extensive training and a passion for patient-centered cancer care.

In addition to caring for patients, Dr. Matar is actively involved in cancer research, medical education and leadership with the American Society of Clinical Oncology. His work helps keep him at the forefront of emerging treatments and advances in cancer care, allowing him to bring the latest evidence-based therapies to Southern Maryland.

For Dr. Matar, exceptional cancer care begins with listening. “Every patient has unique goals, values and concerns,” he said. “The best treatment plan is one that’s personalized, evidence-based and developed together.”

He believes patients should feel heard, informed and supported throughout every stage of their journey. Whether treatment is focused on cure, long-term management or improving quality of life, Dr. Matar is committed to helping patients navigate each step with compassion and confidence.

Originally from Lebanon, he earned his medical degree from Holy Spirit University of Kaslik before completing advanced training in both Lebanon and the United States, including an internal medicine residency at the University of Connecticut and a Hematology and Medical Oncology fellowship at The George Washington University, where he served as Chief Fellow.

In 2026, he was the first recipient of the James D. Ahlgren Oncology Award by George Washington University, recognizing his contributions to the field of oncology and the broader cancer community.

Dr. Matar recently relocated to Southern Maryland with his wife and their two young children and looks forward to building lasting relationships with patients and becoming an active member of the community.
