Having a Health Emergency? Don’t Hesitate to Get Help

Residents should not avoid the emergency room if experiencing signs of a medical emergency.

Even during a pandemic, emergency systems in Calvert County are equipped and ready to help anyone experiencing serious symptoms. Whether or not the emergency is related to COVID-19, these cases are still considered urgent and anyone experiencing a medical emergency is urged to call 911 or go to the emergency room.

For the safety of patients and staff, CalvertHealth Medical Center is following strict protocols, which include providing medical screening on all patients entering the facility. Those who show signs of respiratory illness or are suspected of having COVID-19 are placed into a private room in the emergency department while being treated.

Patients who suspect they may have the virus are advised to call ahead to the hospital so staff can be prepared to receive them with the appropriate precautions. Patients can contact CalvertHealth by phone at 410.535.8345.

A medical emergency includes any injury or illness for which a lack of immediate treatment may cause harm, including the following, among others:

• Choking
• Trouble breathing
• Persistent severe vomiting or diarrhea
• Coughing or throwing up blood
• Passing out or fainting
• Cardiac arrest or stopped breathing
• Severe chest pain or pressure
• Sudden weakness on one side of the body
• Broken bones
• Deep wounds
• Heavy bleeding
• Severe burns
• Severe allergic reaction with swelling and trouble breathing
• Accidental poisoning or overdose
• Electrical shock
• Head injury with fainting or confusion
• Neck or spine injury with a loss of feeling or movement
• Suicidal ideation and intentions
• Seizures

COVID-19 patients with fever, cough or shortness of breath and serious symptoms such as rapid heart rate, low blood pressure, high or very low temperatures, confusion, trouble breathing or severe dehydration should seek emergency medical care.
