CalvertHealth Earns National Accreditation, Recognized for Leading Oncology Program

11/24/2023
CalvertHealth proudly announces it has earned re-accreditation from the Commission on Cancer (CoC), a quality program of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). To achieve CoC accreditation, CalvertHealth’s Cancer Program underwent a rigorous study and site visit to confirm the program’s compliance with accreditation standards that evaluate the cancer care services offered by the program.

As a CoC-accredited cancer center, as well as a Duke Health affiliate in cancer, CalvertHealth applies a multidisciplinary approach and treats cancer as a complex group of diseases that require consultation among surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists, diagnostic radiologists, pathologists and other health care professionals that specialize in caring for the cancer patient. Cancer patients benefit from having access to screening and prevention events, palliative care, genetic risk assessment, rehabilitation, oncology nutrition and survivorship services. Additionally, through CalvertHealth affiliation with Duke Health, patients also have access to clinical trials only offered at the country’s most prestigious cancer care centers.

“This is a true multidisciplinary program that compares in a positive way to what you would find in an academic center,” said CalvertHealth Chief Medical Officer and Cancer Program Director Dr. Theodore Tsangaris, whose 30-year-career in oncology has included leadership positions at some of the nation’s most prestigious academic institutions.

Cancer care at CalvertHealth has evolved considerably over the past three decades – from the addition of cutting-edge technology and multidisciplinary teams focused on specific tumor sites to the introduction of genetic testing and the rapidly expanding role of immunotherapy, which has been a game-changer in producing more favorable outcomes with fewer side effects.

“At the core of what is happening,” said Dr. Tsangaris, “is how these cancer initiatives impact the lives of the people who rely on us for their care … the hundreds of newly diagnosed cancer patients we treat every year and the thousands of cancer survivors who need our ongoing care and support.”

CalvertHealth’s cancer initiatives were also recognized by Becker’s Hospital Review, a publication for healthcare industry leaders which recently announced its 2023 list of “100 Hospitals or Health Systems with Great Oncology Programs,” which included CalvertHealth, among other organizations that are nationally recognized as top cancer care providers. According to Becker’s, healthcare providers named to this list “offer leading-edge clinical trials and pioneer research discoveries that expand access to care and enhance patient outcomes.”

Becker’s specifically highlighted CalvertHealth’s ability to offer oncology patients advanced technologies and care including multidisciplinary teams, genetic testing and immunotherapy and more.
