Who Can Get a Refund and How to Connect
If you paid more than $25 out of your own pocket for hospital services in 2017 to 2021, a new law may mean money back for you. Refunds are available to people who could have gotten free care during that time. You may qualify if your income was less than twice the federal poverty level, or you were enrolled in programs like SNAP, MEAP, WIC, or you had a kid in the school free or reduced-cost meal program.
How to Get a refund:
Wait for a Letter:
- You will receive a letter if you qualify.
- If you receive a letter, contact the hospital or hospitals named in the letter by June 1, 2025.
- Expect to hear by January 2025.
If you do not receive a letter:
- Contact us before June 1, 2025. To qualify for a refund-
- You must have had a hospital visit at this hospital in 2017-2021.
- You must have paid over $25 for the visit.
- You must provide documents that show that, in the same year you had the hospital visit:
- Your family earned less than 200% of the federal poverty level (use tax papers or pay stubs); OR
- Your family was enrolled the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP); OR
- Your family was enrolled in the Maryland Energy Assistance Program (MEAP); OR
- Your family was enrolled in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC); OR
- The kids in your household qualified, based on family income, for the free or reduced-cost meals at school.
What if I had a more recent hospital visit?
If you received your first hospital bill for a hospital visit within the
last 240 days, you can still apply for hospital financial assistance. More information about applying for financial assistance is available at this weblink: CalvertHealthMedicine.org/Financial-Assistance. If you are found eligible for free hospital care and you already paid a bill for that visit, the hospital must provide a refund of the amount that you paid.
